To drive any vehicle, California requires that a person displays
knowledge of pertinent rules and laws and exhibits operational skills.
However, marine craft currently carry no such requirement, although it is the
individual responsibility of any boat operator/owner to know and conform
to all legal registration and operational mandates. For your own safety
and that of your passengers - and the protection of your investment - it
is important that each operator possesses knowledge of basic boating
skills and rules of the waterway. This can be as simple as
contacting your local Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla.
Note: California is one of the States that currently does not require a license
or a boating class to operate a boat in California. That requirement is currently
being studied and it may become a requirement to have taken and pass an Auxiliary
sponsored Boating Safety class. Boaters should consider taking a class before the
law takes effect and the classes fill up.
Regular classes are offered to the public at a very nominal fee. For the Santa
Clarita area, Flotilla 43 offers the following classes;
- ABC - Basic Boating Skills
- Basic Skills and Seamanship

- Basic Navigation
- Advanced Navigation
- GPS (satellite navigation)
- Sailing Fundamentals
- PWC Operations
- Boating Fun for Children - "COASTIE"
